Listening
Writing requires a phase I think of as "listening." Waiting for scenes
to pop into my head, waiting for character voices, trying to tune into
the right channel. Sometimes I feel like Jodie Foster's character in the
movie Contact, listening for any recognizable signal to emanate from the sky.
This is how I write music, Jenn. I play a note or a chord and then I stop and listen to what comes next. I guess it's the same with writing stories, but I never thought of it until you said it.
ReplyDeleteInteresting ... it makes sense that you would compose music this way.
DeleteSometimes stories come faster than I can write, and sometimes I have to wait for them.
Ahh, this is so true, Jenn. And difficult at times. When I am anxious to write, patient listening can be challenging. That's when I open my writer's notebook and scribble thoughts and ideas, character sketches, etc.
ReplyDeleteYes, that scribbling can be part of listening.
