First draft

Reminder to self:

It's only a first draft. It doesn't have to be perfect. It's not time to edit yet. The first draft is not for solving all the world's problems and taking the literary world by storm. It's for getting the words down. It's the clay that will get shaped.

  1. I mutter these same words to myself again and again while drafting a new novel. It's hard to turn off the inner editor, isn't it? Wish I had a button for that. ^_^

    1. I visualize the muse stuffing the inner critic into a trunk. The critic gets to come out when it's revision time!

  2. Amen.

Does your muse have an extra padlock for that trunk? Mine would love to borrow one.

    1. *sending over padlock*

If you scatter cobwebs in the bottom of the trunk, the inner critic will probably leap in to start cleaning them up.

  3. I need this reminder EVERY TIME I start a new story. And I just happen to be starting a new one now so THANK YOU.

    1. Happy writing!

I'm always sad that my writing isn't more brilliant in the first draft. And then I remember that every first draft goes this way.
