Tension

I've been thinking a lot about sources of tension -- tension in stories, that is. Here's what I've come up with:

thwarted/frustrated desires
competition
secrets
mysteries, questions
choices, dilemmas
ticking clocks
danger, threats

Can you think of others?

  4. Romantic tension, though that often falls under frustrated desires or choices. And general clashing of personalities; the lovely diversity of humans and their emotions. That's always good stuff.
